This IGASS recognised and supported, training program with its inception in 2015, is presented as a full time fellowiship for newly qualified surgeons, with the specific goal of furthering skills in the discipline of spinal surgery.
The fellowship program spans over a period of one year.
Trainees function as an integral part of the spinal-unit, dealing with various spinal pathologies in the adult- and paediatric populations. Fellows are expected to participate in in-patient care, out-patient clinics as well as theatre duties, and are involved in all facets of patient care and decision making.
Trainee obligations will approximate 50% clinical duties, with 40% dedicated to research, and a further 10% allocated to teaching responsibilities of undergraduate students and Orthopaedic registrars.
The trainee will work in close proximity with the course director and spinal consultant – Dr. J.H. Davis as well as spinal consultant Dr. Sanesh Miseer at both Tygebergerg Academic Hospital (Public Sector) as well as Mediclinic Winelands Orthopaedic Hospital, Institute of Orthopaedics and Rheumatology (Private Sector).
Additionally the trainee will work with other experienced spinal surgeons – from Orthopaedic-surgery and Neuro-surgical backgrounds with hands-on experience and exposure to surgical technicques and interventions. After-hours duties may be required.

The weekly duties include:
He/She will be expected to complete a research project, under supervision of the course director, Dr J.H Davis – culminating in a peer reviewed- and published article as well as podium presentations, at local and or international congresses.
Applicants have to submit a complete and updated CV and letter of motivation (300 words detailing reasons for the intended involvement in this program) to the course director – Dr J.H. Davis via e-mail ([email protected]).
The best-suited applicants will be required to particiapte in a personal or telephonic interview with the fellowship subsequently awarded to the successful applicant.
The allocation of this fellowship program is at the discretion of the program director. The fellowship will be awarded on an annual basis.

- Trauma of the vertebral column (30%)
- Infective conditions of the spine (20%)
- Degenerative conditions and deformity of the spine – in the adult population (35%)
- Spinal deformity (Adult and Paediatric) (10%)
- Tumor and neoplastic conditions of the spine (5%)
The weekly duties include:
- Monday: Full day Theatre at Mediclinic Winelands Orthopaedic Hospital (company of Dr J.H. Davis)
- Tuesday: Full day Theatre at Tygerberg Hospital – Fellow’s slate (supervision Dr S. Miseer)
- Wednesday: Morning Clinic at Tygerberg Hospital, afternoon Theatre at Mediclinic Winelands Orthopaedic Hospital (company of Dr J.H. Davis)
- Thursday: Full day Theatre at Tygerberg Hospital company of / or supervised by Dr J.H. Davis or Dr S. Miseer)
- Friday: Academic ward round (company of Dr S. Miseer), followed by protected research time

Applicant requirements:
- All applicants must have completed postgraduate training as an Orthopaedic- or Neuro-surgeon
- The successful applicant will be registered as a supernumary employee at Tygerberg Academic Hospital, and is therefore required to comply with the required provisions for medical practice within South Africa (as dictated by Health Professions Council South Africa)
- Successful applicants will be required to cover their own Medico-legal insurance for private assistance, if they wish to be involved in this aspect of the program
- Appointment fellows must be in possession of their own transport, in order to commute between the two hospitals where they will be expected to work
- A monthly honorarium is to be paid into the bank account of the trainee’s specification
- Fellows are responsible for their own accommodation during their tenure
