A. Fellowship Program
The objective of this one-year fellowship is to train fellows with subspecialty-level knowledge and skills in the diagnosis and management of hip and knee arthroplasty. Together with a greater understanding in the management of traumatic neck of femur fracture, peri-prosthetic fractures and revision arthroplasty, in order to function independently as an orthopaedic arthroplasty specialist.
Participants will be trained in multiple approaches to the hip and knee joint, being exposed to range of hip and knee implants, including primary and revision implants. Also gain exposure in specialised disease specific implants, 3D printing and tumour reconstructive implants. The arthroplasty unit is a dedicated training facility for direct anterior approach hip surgery and robotic assisted knee surgery.
The Tygerberg Arthroplasty fellowship (TAF) is hosted in conjunction with the Tygerberg orthopaedic trauma service, allowing for experience in neck of fracture management, periprosthetic fractures and its sequelae and complications. The caseload, wherein the trainee is either the primary surgeon or first assistant, includes a sufficient number of operative procedures to gain proficiency in the management of these cases.
The fellowship program has continues run for the last 6 years with past fellows all still involve and contribute to the TAF platform.
